(SRS03) National Sport Training Package

In 2003 Sport and Recreation Australia (SRTA) and the Australian National Training Authority (ANTA) endorsed the National Sport Training Package (SRS03). Within this training package are qualifications in Sport Coaching specialising in Martial Arts as follows:
  • (SRS20303) Certificate II in Sport (Coaching)
  • (SRS30303) Certificate III in Sport (Coaching)
  • (SRS40203) Certificate IV in Sport (Coaching)
  • (SRS50203) Diploma of Sport (Coaching)

In each qualification the course is broken down into Core units, Stream units, Specialisation units and Electives. It is possible to utilise a combination of the following delivery modes:- Face to Face and on the job-(in the martial arts club) to achieve competence in the Core and stream units, however Face to Face and on the job modes to satisfy the Specialisation and elective units.

SRS20303 Certificate II in Sport (Coaching) - (Duration 1 year)

SPECIALISATION: MARTIAL ARTS - Wing Chun Kung Fu

Description:-

Certificate II in Sport Coaching for the Martial Arts has been designed to cater for individuals wanting to establish a career as an instructor in the martial arts industry specialising in Wing Chun Kung Fu. The graduate will attain an Intermediate (Grade 3) standard in Wing Chun enabling them to teach up to Grade 2 standard.

Modules

Core: Communication, Administration, Dealing with Clients, Operating Computer Packages, First Aid, Sport and Recreation industry and Occupational Health and Safety.

Coaching Stream: Operate in accord with accepted coaching practices, styles and ethical responsibilities. Apply rules and regulations to conduct games and competitions. Assist in preparing and conducting sport and recreation sessions for participants. Provide equipment for activities.

Martial Arts Specialisation: Develop knowledge of the martial arts industry. Collect information on the structure, foundations and philosophy of the martial arts industry. Teach and develop the basic skills of martial arts (Wing Chun Kung Fu).

Elective: Develop and maintain a volunteer program. Develop practices to establish effective club management. Implement injury prevention and apply basic first aid. Maintain cleanliness and hygiene of the facility. Front-line management.

Elective units may be drawn from the Certificates III and IV in Fitness

SRS30303 Certificate III in Sport (Coaching) - (Duration 18 months)

Description:-

Certificate III in Sport Coaching has been designed to cater for individuals wanting to establish a career as an instructor and a professional in the martial arts industry. This qualification can be achieved on its own (there are prerequisite competencies that will need to be completed first) or after having completed the SRS20303 Certificate II in Sport (Coaching). The graduate will attain an Intermediate (Grade 4) standard in Wing Chun enabling them to teach up to Grade 3 standard.

Summary of Certificate III Modules

Core: Communication and Administration, Advanced First Aid Response, Dealing with client needs, expectations and complaints, Advanced use of Computer packages, Apply Sport and Recreation Law, Analyse market patterns in the leisure and recreation industry and Risk Analysis.

Coaching Stream: Accepted coaching practices and legal responsibilities, include special interest groups and people with special needs, Sports Psychology, nutrition, Apply rules and regulations to conduct games and competitions, Sports First Aid, Plan, organise and conduct sport and recreation programs, Deal with Conflict.

Martial Arts Specialisation: Teach intermediate skills of kung fu.

Elective: Customise coaching to include children, mature aged athletes and athletes with disabilities, Knowledge of weapons legislation and community safety, the safe use and instruction of padded weapons, the safe use and instruction of wooden or blunt weapons, the safe use and instruction of steel/live edged weapons. Other electives derived from the Certificates III and IV in Fitness.

SRS40203 Certificate IV in Sport (Coaching) - (Duration 2 years)

Description:-

Certificate IV in Sport Coaching has been designed to cater for individuals wanting to establish a career as an independent professional martial arts instructor in the martial arts industry instructing Wing Chun Kung Fu . This qualification can be achieved on its own (there are prerequisite competencies that will need to be completed first) or after having completed the SRS30303 Certificate III in Sport (Coaching). The graduate will attain an Advanced (Level 1) standard in Wing Chun enabling them to teach up to Grade 4 standard.

Summary of Certificate IV Modules

Core: Communications, Administration and Management. Lead work teams. Client needs and service. Sport and Recreation law and legal principles, Analyse participation patterns in specific markets of the leisure and recreation industry, OH&S, analysing markets and risk analysis, Emerging technology.

Coaching Stream: Selecting teams or groups, Working with officials. Provide information regarding drugs in sport. Sports psychology, Eating for peak performance, Coach welfare, Recovery programming, Plan, Conduct and evaluate long term training programs. Facilitate a Group and Deal with conflict.

Martial Arts Specialisation: Teach advanced skills of martial arts.

Elective: Customised coaching for children, customised coaching for mature aged participants and customised coaching for people with disabilities. Sports trainer. Basic strength and conditioning with and without the use of resistance equipment. Other modules from certificate IV in Fitness.

SRS50203 Diploma in Sport (Coaching) - (Duration 18 months)

Description:-

Diploma of Sport Coaching has been designed to cater for individuals wanting to establish their own martial arts school teaching Wing Chun Kung Fu . This qualification can be achieved after having completed the SRS40203 Certificate IV in Sport (Coaching). The graduate will attain an Advanced (Level 2) standard in Wing Chun enabling them to teach up to Level 1 standard.

Summary of Diploma in Sport Coaching Martial Arts Modules:-

Core: Management, Marketing, Promote compliance with laws and legal principles, determine the needs of client populations, manage culture and education to expand participation in the martial arts, foster values and ethos of the phenomenon of play. Manage evolving patterns of work to expand participation in a martial arts school, OH&S Risk Management.

Coaching Stream: Establish selection policies for activities, Implement water based training programs, Implement talent identification programs, Evaluate, Analyse and modify long term training programs for high performance individualised training programs, Plan and Prepare the participants to meet the demands of high level participation, Conduct, monitor and adjust high level performance individualised training programs, Provide leadership to groups.

Martial Arts Specialisation: Teach the high performance skills of martial arts, Prepare and Customise planning for the high performance skills of martial arts participants, design long term training plan for a high performance martial arts participant.

Elective: Co-ordinate and implement first aid training for staff and instructors. Business management. Develop, establish and evaluate marketing strategies and opportunities. Analyse the psychology of the martial arts industry. Teach, develop and manage the advanced strength and conditioning skills required for high performance martial artists.

i) Entry Requirements

As this course is completely self contained, it is designed for beginners with no previous experience. Basic literacy skills are required.

There are no discrimination to prospective students on the basis of culture, religion, race, gender, age and background. The academy adheres to all EEO legislative requirements

Learners come to us mainly through word of mouth and media exposure. It is our policy to have an initial discussion with each prospective member in which we establish their aims in learning and any specialised areas of interest or expertise they may have. This process is carried out by an instructor who has been trained to assess the suitability of the prospective student's character in light of our philosophy, teaching and training practices and code of ethics.

Intending students must have :
  • No criminal record (declaration clearly indicated on the enrolment form)
  • Having intentions and general philosophy that coincide with Wing Chun teachings
  • If it is considered that the person's intentions do not coincide with ours in these areas, they are not offered a place to train with us.
  • There are special cases for persons of mature age

English Language Proficiency

The International Wing Chun Academy' requirement for over-seas students to have basic English language skills is in line with policy as listed by the Dept of Immigration and Multicultural affairs.

The guidelines are as listed below:

Overseas students from country assessment levels 1 and 2 must complete an English language test designed by Oxford University Press and University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate unless clearly not relevant. This international English language testing system is done by the student, on the premises of the International Wing Chun Academy in the company of the overseas student coordinator. Students whom achieve a score of lower intermediate or intermediate will be excepted as students of the International Wing Chun Academy. A copy of the English Language Proficiency assessment will be attached to the students file for future reference.

Overseas students from country assessment levels 3 (Korea, Indonesia) will need to have an English language proficiency level as listed below:

  • IELTS 4.5 - Overseas Students with preliminary 30 week maximum ELICOS course or 5.5 IELTS or equivalent.

Overseas students from country assessment levels 4 (China, Jordan) will need to have an English language proficiency level as listed below:

  • 5.0 IELTS with a preliminary 20 week maximum ELICOS course or 5.5 IELTS with no preliminary course

Students from country assessment levels 3 & 4 must sit an IELTS test. The IELTS must be done at a recognized testing facility such as Gold Coast TAFE in Southport. Results of the assessment must be provided to the International Wing Chun Academy before enrolment in a course for overseas students will be allowed. A copy of the students English Language Proficiency assessment will be attached to the students file.

ii) Course Structure

The courses will be delivered on a full time basis that will incorporate both on and off the job components. The delivery will involve 20 hours per week for 30 weeks for a total of 600 hours. Allowing for 9 weeks holidays over the 9 month period. The year is broken up into 4 x 13 week periods which entitle students to 3 weeks holidays every 10 weeks to make up the 13 weeks periods.

The 20 hours per week will entail both off the-job and on-the-job training.

Off-the-job – This time comprises of a combination of :

·  Lecture / Tutorial – 1.5 hours per week is for students and tutor to work through and discuss the topic at hand

·   Practical Training -  10 hours per week to be utilised to train in the art of wing chun kung fu

·   Workshop / self study – 3.5 hours per week is for student to attend the workshops and study blocks and work through the the work in preparation for the ensuing week topics.

This time is your learning time where you develop your knowledge and skill in the course competencies.

On-the-job –  Students are training to become Martial Arts Coaches. In order to gain experience in this area the on-the-job components are delivered through trainees teaching in a simulated work environment in the casual classes conducted at the IWCA. These trainees periodically undergo assessments conducted by a qualified trainer and assessor.  This will entail 5 hours per week of practical on-the-job training and associated activities.

Where students have missed classes or have not been able to attempt the assessment tasks work shops will be conduced for 3 weeks of every 13 week period. These workshops are an opportunity for those students, who have missed parts of the course or have been deemed not yet competent, to make up the requirements to satisfy competence in the relevant modules.

Many of the core, specialisation and elective units have particular practical application to the martial arts units and hence students are required to undertake exercises and small projects during both their on-the-job and off-the-job martial arts training. These exercises and projects will be discussed during off the job training sessions

Students will attend this course on a full time basis. Practical training will be held in day and/or evening classes to suit students varying schedules. This is a significant part of the IWCA flexible learning policy.

Students will be advised of lecture and tutorial times as they are scheduled.

RPL will be granted where appropriate according to the IWCA Policy and Procedures.

iii) Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) / Current Competencies (RCC)

Students requesting Recognition of Prior Learning must complete Recognition of Prior Learning/ Competencies available on request from the office and arrange an appointment with a senior instructor for assessment.

Where a student requests RPL for a module or competencies within a module, and the student has not recently completed a training program, the prospective student may undertake an assessment for that module and their current competency level will be determined
