What is Wing Chun : Wing Chun Masters : The Academy : The Genuine Art

The Importance of Learning the Genuine Art

An instructor corrects a student performing the Sil Lim Tao (Siu Nim Tau) formBecause of the simplicity of Wing Chun's movements, it is an easy style to copy. However, without a sound foundation in the true principles of the art, even the keenest student could find himself in trouble in a real-life fighting situation. He would discover the techniques cannot work if they are used relying on brute force.

There can only be a correct or incorrect way of practising Wing Chun, and students who are serious about learning the art must ensure they choose a teacher with the right knowledge and training.

Sifu Jim Fung and Sigung Chu Shong Tin (Tsui Seung Tin)Grandmaster Fung prides himself on the high standard and purity of his Academy's teaching. Since 1960, he has trained continuously under his own master, Chu Shong Tin (Tsui Seung Tin), the top Wing Chun master in the world and a closed door student of Yip Man. In his later years, Yip Man appointed Great Grandmaster Tsui to take over teaching his students, and publicly acknowledged his superior skills.

Grandmaster Fung says that over the years he has taught many people who have been trained incorrectly elsewhere. They use the wrong muscles when striking, apply the wrong force, often resorting to brute strength, and have developed bad habits. This makes it harder for them to start again using the correct system and in some cases, they start behind the beginners.

"Unless you are trained correctly, you are missing out on the many incredible features of the Wing Chun system and robbing yourself of the best opportunity to learn to protect your safety and wellbeing." Grandmaster Fung says.

"The Academy does not aim to train students up to be supermen or superwomen but we guarantee that we can enhance your fighting ability by dispensing with the need for brute force, increasing your power and improving your reflexes and overall fitness with effective methods and techniques."
